Cameroon, varied cultures and landscapes

With 20 million inhabitants, Cameroon, located in the Gulf of Guinea possesses natural and cultural riches beyond any other country in central Africa. Shaped like Africa upside-down, Cameroon offers a mosaic of landscapes often overlooked by tourists. With its surface area of 475 442 km2, the country offers a wide variety of climates (Sahelian in the north and tropical in the south) making it possible to visit the whole year round. You can consult the Foreign Office for information regarding entry regulations. With several regular flights each week, Air France serves both of Cameroun's capital cities: Douala, the economic capital and the country's most populous city, and Yaoundé, known as the “City of Seven Hills”. When you reach one of these French-speaking metropolis, stop to admire the principal monuments, including buildings from the German colonial period, in Douala, or in Yaoundé, Charles Atangana's royal palace and the Benedictine Monastery Art Museum with its collection of African masks.

From Cameroon's lunar landscapes to its luxurious wild fauna

In the extreme north of the country, the village of Rhumsiki is a remarkable tourist site. Its breath-taking lunar landscape is famous for a rock whose phallic form has made it into a ritual site for sterile women and newly-weds! To the west of Cameroon, the Mountain Route stretches out along 400 km to Bamenda. Between the thick fog which hides the rubber, coffee and banana plantations, and the green mountains, you won't know which way to turn!

To the north of the country, the national parks are the ideal place to admire the wildlife. Cameroon is a peaceful haven offering several nature reserves and national parks. The most famous is Waza, in the extreme north. With its 170 000 hectares, it is one of the largest playgrounds for lions, giraffes, cheetahs and elephants. Head down a short way towards Garoua, and you will come to the preferred habitat of the rhinoceros, the Bouba Ndjida park. The Benoue park nearby protects the Derby elk, one of the largest species of antelope. To the south-east, the Dja reserve, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the largest in Cameroon. You'll be able to see the most endangered species in the world: the gorilla.

Don't leave Cameroon without a visit to the beach!

With 400 km of coastline, the country is a godsend for lovers of fishing and water sports. For relaxation, the Kribi region is the ideal Cameroon Riviera, with sandy beaches and palm trees, just waiting for you! More surprising, discover the black volcanic sand of Limbe, 80 km from Douala. A little further south, the Lobe Falls are well worth a visit. The more energetic will want to take a hike up Mount Cameroon, at an altitude of more than 4 000 metres. The “Hope Race” is held here in February, when the fastest runners climb 42 km in just 4h30!
