Located between the Dead Sea and the Red Sea, three quarters of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is occupied by desert. The Wadi Rum desert, also known as the “Valley of the Moon”, is the best known, and is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. It offers a breath-taking spectacle with its mountains, its dunes, its wild flowers, its native plants and unique species of birds. Used as the location for the film Lawrence of Arabia, it was the headquarters of Prince Fayçal Bin Hussein and T.E. Lawrence during the First World War

But Jordan has managed to preserve its majestic landscapes as the many natural reserves demonstrate. In the Ajloun mountains, you can appreciate the oak-covered hills, pistachio trees, pines and wild strawberries. Between the Jordanian Rift Valley and the Wadi Araba desert, the Dana nature reserve is home to ancient ruins among the varied scenery. The best periods to appreciate Jordan's natural riches are spring and autumn. In the desert climate which dominates the country, the temperature is surprisingly low in winter.
