Vietnam, the dragon of the south and the meeting-place of different cultures
You can't mention Vietnam without talking about its history: successive occupations by the Chinese and the French, as well as the war with America. These events have given Vietnam a special stature and a very rich heritage. The principal city in the south - Hô Chi-Minh City - has as many skyscrapers as traditional houses. Its colonial quarter, with in particular the Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Central Post Office and the Reunification Palace are clear reminders of the French colonial presence.
The capital, Hanoï, is also affected by the political history of the country. Saint- Joseph's Cathedral and the Mausoleum of President Ho Chi Minh are both symbols of the importance of its history in the Vietnamese cultural identity. The European city of Dalat, also called the “City of the Eternal Spring”, was founded by the French and remains famous for its colonial architecture and the remarkable lake at its centre. A place to admire by reserving a ticket for a regular Air France flight to Vietnam.
Vietnam and its historical sites
In the south-west of the country, the archaeological site of My Son represents an old religious centre and is the birthplace of the Hindu culture established in the IInd century AD. It is also the former political capital of the kingdom of Champa.
The city of Hôi An, recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, also reflects several different styles of architecture, including Chinese, Japanese and French, and attracts a large number of visitors every year. You too can enjoy the beauty of these sites thanks to regular Air France flights to the country, and in particular to Ho Chi-Minh City.
Discover magnificent natural resources
Located on the far end of the Indo-Chinese peninsula, Vietnam offers a remarkable variety of landscapes, despite its small surface area. It includes both mountains and plains, and also marshes and beaches. There are numerous natural sites, the Mekong Delta and the Halong Bay are the best known locations. The former, in the south of the country, is spread over nine different provinces and flows into the South China Sea. All around, you can see the vast lush plains covered with rice fields, giving rise to the delta's nickname of ”Vietnam's rice granary”. In the north-east, Halong Bay is strewn with islands and strangely-formed rocks. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is a geological spectacle unlike any other!
